Chapter 13

Friday 7th October

Shepherd waited for the call to be answered. It took a moment or two. “Hello, Charles, it’s Daniel speaking, sorry to bother you, but I’m having difficulty reaching Rudi, you wouldn’t happen to know where he is, would you?”

“On his way to Mozambique.”

“Right, that explains why he’s not answering his phone.” Actually, an hour ago, he’d watched Opperman’s flight take off from King Shaka Airport, knowing he would first be flying to Johannesburg and then onto Vilanculos, landing there in about three and a half hours. “Are you free this afternoon? I have some information, on the matter we were discussing the other day.”

“Yes.”

Hudson didn’t sound too enthusiastic, but he’d already checked his electronic diary and noticed it was clear. “Great, I’m only fifteen minutes away from your office.” He was round the back of the building, just across the road and out of sight. “I’ll update you then.”

“Good, I’m looking forward to it.” Hudson couldn’t have sounded less convincing, but that was to be expected.

“Okay, Charles, bye.” He placed the phone in his jacket and then turned to look at the laptop, sitting on the passenger seat. He took hold of it and reread the decoded e-mail from Barnes. It was her latest update. He was disappointed to learn that her true identity had been uncovered, but that had always been a possibility. Now they had to deal with it. The unexpected Facebook post, inadvertently giving their location away was unfortunate, but he knew both he and Barnes could handle it, as she had proved with the sudden appearance of Pascal. The biggest surprise, the unforeseen connection between her and Taylor, no-one had seen that coming. Intrigued he composed a response, then encrypted it and sent it.

Five minutes later he was knocking on Hudson’s office door. Well prepared for what would be heading his way. He heard the acknowledgement, pushed open the door and walked confidently in. “Good afternoon, Charles, thank you for agreeing to see me.”

“Sit-down.” Hudson said, rummaging in his desk drawer.

He picked the closest chair and settled, smiling. “How come Rudi’s in Mozambique?”

“The British claim to have intelligence suggesting that Taylor is still alive and hiding there,” Hudson replied, slamming the drawer closed.

He smiled making out he was bemused. “You have to be joking.”

“Do I?”

“Surely you’re not taking this seriously.”

“Daniel, I have to take everything seriously. That’s the main reason I’m still alive.”

“I can understand that, but you know I killed her, I brought you the evidence, and the police have found her remains, haven’t they?”

“So they say.”

He frowned. “Charles, do you doubt that she’s dead?”

“I’m not sure what to think at the moment. That’s why Rudi’s gone to investigate.”

“Who told you about all this?” He knew the answer.

“Rudi, he said the British had a copy of the film you two showed to Pascal, and that they believed Taylor was in Mozambique under Russian protection.”

He shook his head. “I think I can see what’s happened here. I might have known he was behind this.
